The 'Reverse' rapper has responded to criticism following his alleged XXXTentacion 'diss', saying that he "vehemently rejects the trend" of "championing abusers."

Vic Mensa has responded to the public backlash after reports surfaced that he has dissed the late rapper XXXTentacion during a freestyle.

The Roc Nation rapper was slammed by attendees of the BET Hip-Hop Awards after his cypher, which Mensa claims was pre-recorded "weeks ago", featured a jab at the 'Moonlight' rapper.

During the cypher, Mensa allegedly criticised rappers who have been found guilty of abuse. The mother of XXXTentacion was in the audience at the time, as she was receiving a posthumous award for her son.

The move, which was seen as "disrespectful" by fans of the Florida native, has appeared to urge Mensa to publicly respond in a video on his Instagram page.

"Recently I did a freestyle for the BET Awards cypher dressing and condemning rappers who unabashedly abuse women and those who stand up for them and even all them ‘legends’," he said. "I stand behind those statements."

"It was pre-recorded weeks ago and I had no idea a grieving mother would be in the audience to honour her lost son. I never intended to disrespect her, and I offer my deepest condolences for her loss at the hands of gun violence."

"However, I vehemently reject the trend in Hip-Hop of championing abusers and I will not hold my tongue about it. I don’t give a f*ck about getting attention, I care about bringing awareness and holding people accountable for their actions."

XXXTentacion's mother is yet to respond to the incident. The footage from the BET Hip-Hop Awards will broadcast on BET on 16th October.
