During the speech, Madonna admitted that Aretha Franklin’s classic ‘R.E.S.P.E.C.T’ helped her start her own career in music.

“None of this would have happened, could have happened without our lady of soul,” she said.

Madonna told fans about the time she was living in Detroit with very little money and getting rejected from auditions for “not being pretty enough.”

She also revealed that she sang Aretha Franklin’s song ‘Natural Woman’ during an early audition as a backing dancer, which contributed to her travelling to Paris and beginning her musical career.

She ended the speech with an emotional message: “Thank you Aretha for empowering all of us, Our R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Long live the queen.”

However soon after Madonna had finished the speech, fans were quick to slam her tribute for being self-indulgent.

Meanwhile, this year’s MTV VMAs was filled with a series of incidents that didn’t go unnoticed.

Nicki Minaj’s feud with Travis Scott and Kylie Jenner led to a number of awkward encounters, while fans are convinced that Cardi B also threw shade at the New York rapper.

Jennifer Lopez also stole the show with a stunning medley after winning the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.
