The South London rapper took home the trophy and a £25,000 cash prize.

His album won huge critical acclaim upon it's release in March 2019 and now Dave can add the Mercury Prize to his huge list of accolades after he scooped the big prize at London's Hammersmith Apollo.

'Psychodrama' had been tipped by many as a frontrunner to take home the prize, but Dave seemed genuinely shocked when his name was read out as the winner.

The Streatham-based rapper joins a long list of Capital XTRA favourites including Skepta, Ms Dynamite and Dizzee Rascal in winning the award.

The judging panel, which this year included Stormzy and Jorja Smith, said “Psychodrama is the musical equivalent of a literary masterpiece: a conceptual album about Dave’s experience of growing up in South London, structured in the form of a therapy session, which takes a deeply personal story and gives it universal relevance."

They added, "Psychodrama is a moving, musically sophisticated work that tackles complex themes of identity, class, relationships and politics and demands total attention from the listener. It will have lasting relevance for a generation and underlines the importance of the album as an art form, making it the perfect winner of the 2019 Hyundai Mercury Prize”
