A huge fire has engulfed a nearby forest, close to the Fresh Island festival in Croatia.

Thousands of people have been evacuated from hip hop festival Fresh Island, after a huge fire broke out in a nearby forest, according to witnesses.

Festival-goers filmed the blaze, which started on Monday night, on their phones, as plumes of smoke rose from the site near Zcre beach, on the island of Pag.

The dramatic footage shows revellers running away from the blaze, before the area was closed off as a safety precaution.

The festival's official Twitter wrote the following statement this morning: “The emergency services are still working to contain the remaining fire so we can’t say just yet how this will affect today’s beach performances. Rest assured we’re doing everything we can to go ahead as planned to continue the parties."

An eye witness, Jess Storey, told the Mirror Online: "The flames were at times double the height of the trees and the smoke cloud grew very quickly, also.

"We made the decision to leave immediately - many people had noticed the fire but were filming it and not taking action so we decided to get out before there was a mass stampede.

"The people on the lower level did not seem to have noticed the flames."

Fresh Island festival, which was founded in 2012, has become on of the biggest and most popular hop hop festivals in the world.

This year's line-up includes Tyga, Tory Lanez, Afro B and more.
