Dr. Dre shows support for use of AI in music

Dr. Dre is one of the biggest names in hip-hop, with his collaborations with his friends Snoop Dogg and Eminem always living on as some of the best hits. But he has now spoken out in support of AI in music. Here is what he had to say.

Dr. Dre is one of the most famous names in hip-hop, with tracks like ‘Still Dre’ and ‘Forget about Dre’ considered some of the best in the genre, but his recent comments on the use of AI in music have caused a divide.
The 61-year-old is one of the most notable music producers, having a huge impact on how hip-hop evolved in terms of sound.

With long-standing relationships with some of the biggest rappers, including Snoop Dogg and Eminem, his recent opinion on AI in music has shocked a lot of fans.
Speaking to the New York Times, the artist shared that he thought the technology was just the most recent development in music, much like people having strong opinions on synthesizers and drum machines when they were first created.
Dr. Dre said: “I think the only people that see it as a threat are the people who have trouble creating. It’s a new tool for creativity.”
He added: “Some people are afraid of learning new things. [I use AI] as a tool to see what it would do with what I just did.”
His business partner, Jimmy Lovine, also added that there are a lot of ‘closet producers’ out there that are also using AI, including the much-loved Timbaland.
This discussion comes shortly after the release and backlash against ‘Taste’ rapper Tyga’s new album ‘Starface’.
The 36-year-old got the lowest ever rating by Pitchfork for the work, and he defended his use of AI, in a similar way to Dre, arguing it is just the most recent tool to aid songmakers.
So, whilst still a divisive topic in fanbases, as some argue individual creativity is stunted by AI, it seems that one of our favourites in hip-hop, Dr. Dre, could be a fan.
One fan commented: “The whole point of creating is to do it YOURSELF, not some robot.”
Another said: “Very disappointing to hear the legends talking like this. REAL music must survive.”
