Nicki wins her tenth award; J Cole loses out to Kendrick.

The BET Awards, hip hop’s biggest annual event took place last night in LA with Nicki Minaj, Beyoncé and Stormzy all picking up awards.

While there were few major upsets, Kendrick Lamar beat out Drake and J Cole to win Best Male Hip-Hop Artist. Sam Smith was the unexpected winner in the Best New Artist Category which was tipped to go to Fetty Wap.

Nicki Minaj won the Best Female Hip-Hop Artist Category for the sixth time, taking her total BET Awards haul up to 10. Beyoncé won in two categories, Best Female R&B/Pop Artist and Video of the Year.

Among the other winners were: Chris Brown, who came away with the Best Male R&B award; Stormzy, who won Best International Act UK, and Mississippi duo Rae Sremmurd who took home Best Group.

The ceremony honoured Janet Jackson with stars like Ciara paying tribute to the “ All for You” singer in their performances.
