19 1990s Hip-Hop Fashion Staples That Are Making A Comeback

    Facebook share Twitter share

Let's hope Jay Z kept hold of that denim two-piece and Kanye West put the bucket hat in storage, because these 90s looks are totally making a comeback.

    1. TLC with Dr Dre

      1. Oversize checked shirts and gilets.

This photo is so 90s it's hard to know where to begin, and yet it's also so 2014. The oversize checked shirt is a wardrobe staple for men and women alike in 2014 and how many guys do you know that own that puffa jacket style gilet that Dre's wearing?

    2. Fugees

      2. Dungarees.

Wyclef Jean, Lauryn Hill and Praz from The Fugees showed the world how to wear a dungarees and not look like you were on your way to nursery back when this photo was taken in 1996. The comfy and cool look has made its revival several summertimes since, for those brave enough to give it a go.

    3. Hip hop Fashion

      3. The bucket hat.

Back in the late 1990's Kanye West was just one of the many rappers that paired their baggy t-shirts with a bucket hat. After collecting dust at the back of some rather large rap wardrobes for the last couple of decades, loads of artists, most notably Chris Brown, have revived the look. Picture: Getty

    4. Hip hop Fashion

      4. The baseball jersey.

Coolio, Andre 3000, Jay Z... The list of rappers that wore baseball jerseys in the 1990s is endless, because they pretty much all did. While the jerseys haven't dated quite like Versace shirts, they did go off-radar for a while. But now they are back in full-force with high street brands emulating the originals for the masses. 5. Tupac Shakur

      5. The bandana.

Although countless rappers and singers wore the bandana (in its traditional way and in the style Tupac is wearing it in this photo) back in the 90s, it was certainly Tupac that made it iconic. As the 90s ended, so did bandanas popularity. It's only been in recent years that they've started to crop up again on peoples heads, but more so on women than men this time round. Picture: Getty

    6. Hip hop Fashion

      6. The co-ordinate outfit.

No one quite pulled off co-ordinate outfits like TLC did back in the 90s. Here's Lisa 'Lefteye' Lopez showing exactly how it's done with her lilac trousers matching her lilac cropped (obviously) top. Retailers have made suh a popular revival of this trend today that most websites have their own 'Co-ords' section. Picture: PA

    7. Hip hop Fashion

      7. The bomber jacket.

Whatever fabric it was, everyone in hip-hop owned a bomber jacket in the 1990s. Today, you can't walk into a vintage shop (and often charity shops) without seeing a heap of them in the corner thanks to the people that gave them away when the noughties hit (and now probably regret it unbelievable amounts). 8. Hip hop Fashion

      8. The cut-out body-con dress.

The amount of body-con wearing girls you see on a night out in the UK are (finally) starting to die-down. But rewind to 2011/2012 and two out of three girls out on the town would be wearing a skin-tight dress the exact same shape as this one Beyoncé is wearing... Only she wore it two decades earlier. 9. Hip hop Fashion

      9. Denim on denim on denim.

Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake are the King and Queen of denim on denim, no one can forget that famous photo of them from back in the day and no one would ever try to take that title away from them. But hip-hop had their handful of denim-on-denim lovers, including Hov who often rocked the look. After getting a bad name for itself for quite a while, the people that can pull it off are wearing it well this side of 2010. Picture: PA

    10. Hip hop Fashion

      10. Cropped denim jackets.

It's as if the noughties said to women everywhere "we're going to give you a quick break from having your belly button out at all times this decade," because in the 2010s, just like in 1990s, you're more likely to come across a cropped t-shirt, jumper or jacket than you are to come across a regular length one. 11. Aaliyah

      11. The fur coat.

Let's be real - the fur coat never went out of fashion. These days there are so many faux fur products around; coats, gilets and headbands to name a handful, that are all such high quality it's hard to tell they aren't real, that suddenly the fur-look is available to everyone despite whether you're on a rapper's wage. 12. Hip hop Fashion

      12. Wet look leggings and Timberlands.

So most wet look leggings don't have feathers attached to them from the knee down in 2014, but a classic pair of the day-to-night trouser are a staple of any woman's wardrobe. Maybe 2015 is the year for feathre wet look leggings? Can we make this happen? Picture: PA

    13. Outkast hip hop fashion

      13. Tartan.

Outkast's Andre 3000 has always followed his own fashion rules, but who knew he was such a trend-setter? Last winter was all about the tartan be it on the lining of a bomber jacket, a mini skirt or a faint t-shirt print and it looks like the style is hanging in there for this winter too. Although, maybe lay off the stripey socks.

    14. Eminem Grammys

      14. Velour tracksuits.

We all owned one - that includes you. And it was most probably the most comfortable thing you have ever owned in your life. Which is why they are slowly but surely making a comeback (and yes, you will most probably but one this time around too).

    15. Warren G

      15. THAT Adidas jacket.

You weren't anyone in the 90's if you didn't own a classic Adidas tracksuit, or at least the jacket to throw on with a pair of jeans. As 90's fashion makes its revival more and more of these are popping up again... Expect to see them with some Reebok classics. Picture: Getty

    16. Aaliyah and Missy Elliott

      16. Mesh tops.

Aaliyah's style really is timeless. The Princess of R&B rocked a lot of black, and pretty much anything you see her in you'll wish you owned today. For example, this long-sleeve mesh crop top, which is being sold in 50% of UK high street retailers today. Picture: Getty

    17. Beyonce

      17. Camouflage

Although she was only approximately 16-years-old in this photograph, Beyoncé (with some help from her stylist mum, Tina Knowles) was already becoming a trendsetter early on in her career. It was only a few years later she brought back out the camoflauge for Destiny's Child's 'Survivor' video. Picture; Getty

    18. Hip hop Fashion

      18. Leather

The ultimate hip-hop fashion couple of the 90s did a 'Beckham' and wore matchy, matchy leather out to an awards event back in the last century. While we haven't seen many men walking around in their leather pants lately (next season maybe?) we hope J Lo still has that leather mini skirt in her wardrobe. Picture: PA
