Nicki attended the prestigious LaGuardia High School in Manhattan where she initially planned to study music. However, she lost her voice on the day of the audition and ended up studying drama instead. She was known for sticking up for friends, occasionally getting into scraps to defend them. One former classmate said of her in an unauthorised biography that: "You could tell at LaGuardia what someone's major was based on their behaviour, and Nicki was definitely a drama major."
