Could it be true?

Rumours have begun circulating that Kanye West is gearing up to release a surprise new music project next week.

A mysterious package was sent to MTV's office yesterday, comprising of a box "bearing the logo of NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab", an old VHS tape featuring two hours of static, and a mock credit card in Kanye's name with the number 772233688 embossed.

The card additionally had 'PROJECT-10' and '8/10' written on it, and the box also included a pebble in a plastic case.

Interestingly, googling the credit card number takes you to 772233688.com - a blank-looking website which features the same static video as the VHS and plays a continues stream of white noise.

The site also includes some of the phrases on the faux card, and the date March 20 (next Monday), which many fans assumed to be a release date for a potential forthcoming project.

Speculation soon followed that West is gearing up to drop his tenth album (if Watch the Throne and Cruel Summer are counted) due to the repetition of the number 10 in the cryptic package.

However, a Def Jam spokesperson told the publication that it "sounds really weird and suspiciously like a hoax," with one rep later confirming that the project had nothing to do with Ye or his team.

Despite this, fans aren't giving up hope.

Many pointed out that 'Ye has recently been filmed by a young videographer with an old-school VHS recorder, whilst he and his wife Kim have been posting some unusually lo-fi photos across their social media sites of late.

If there's one thing we've learned about Kanye over the years, it's to expect the unexpected!

West is yet to officially comment on the news.

What's going on 'Ye?
