Tell Me Wretch 32 feat. Kojo Funds & Jahlani Download 'Tell Me' on iTunes
This week Lil Kim took shots at Nicki Minaj when she hijacked Nicki and Beyoncé's 'Flawless (Remix)' - but how did this beef begin? Let us take you back to the beginning...
If you look at the promo pictures Nicki Minaj released around the time of her 2007 'Playtime Is Over' mixtape, there is a clear resemblance to Lil Kim's 1996 album cover. Was Nicki taking over or was she paying homage?
Both women admit they first met backstage at a Lil Wayne concert, but both tell the story differently. Nicki says that she asked Kim if everything was cool with them, but Kim responded; "Picture somebody saying to me, 'We good?' I'll ring her throat, snatch her larynx out."
Lil Kim claimed that when she agreed to feature on the track, she had no idea that Nicki would be on it too. In spite of that Kim said she was cool with it, later claiming it would "be good for women," she did however take the opportunity to spit the lyric: "Never be another me/What, you out your mind?" on the track. In 2010 Ray J spoke about the trouble that had been brewing. Whilst stood next to Lil Kim on stage he said: "I'm seeing a lot of Lil' Kim impostors. I'm not saying no names, but you know who." Although she didn't state her name, it was obvious the pair were talking about Nicki when Lil' Kim said: "We love her. We just want her to pay homage. If you don't pay homage then f**k you."
About 24 hours after Ray J and Lil Kim's stunt, Nicki had her own back-up in Drake. After a collaborative performance Drake let the crowd know; "I don't give a f**k what Lil' Kim or nobody else talkin' about. You the baddest chick to ever do this sh*t!" Was Nicki happy Drake stuck up for her? "That's family" she laughed as Drake walked off stage.
In the remix to Diddy's 'Hello Good Morning', Nicki raps "Did I kill a queen?" - is she talking about "Queen Bee" Lil Kim?
In June 2010 Lil Kim spoke openly for the first time about her and Nicki Minaj's cold war. Talking to This Is 50, Lil Kim said that Nicki had been taking subliminal shots at her and other female rappers. The beef continued when Kim rapped at a Queens concert that same month: "I'd kill that b**ch with my old s**t… This s**t come and go."
Later that same month, during a Hot 96 interview, Nicki directly addressed Kim. "Put your music out and when I see your name on Billboard that's when i'll respond to you" Nicki said. "You're going to go down in history now as a sore loser, as opposed to going down in history as the Queen… Don't play with me."
As Nicki Minaj was gearing up for the release of her debut album 'Pink Friday,' Lil Kim dropped a bomb known as 'Black Friday' which heard her rap; "This hood s**t, you and Drake ain’t built for it" and she also dubbed Nicki a "Lil' Kim wannabe" and a "clone".
Lil Kim tweeted that she had sold 113,000 mixtapes on pay pal on the first day of 'Black Friday's' release... And this is what Nicki had to say about that.
After Lil Kim released her album through pay pal only, Nicki dropped her 'Tragedy' diss record. She rapped: "It must hurt to sell your album off PayPal/Especially when you in the game 15 to 20/ You was hot when Shaq teamed up with Penny/ Man, you was Magic/I mean, look at ya now ho, you just tragic/You a tragedy, you a parody/ Last name Ann, first name Raggedy." Ouch.
During a 2010 interview with Power 105, Lil Kim spoke about the history of her problems with Nicki Minaj. She said that Nicki shouldn't have subliminally dissed her on her records and when asked whether she thinks they'll ever be able to make amends, Kim responded: "It will never happen."
In a 2013 interview with Hot 97 Nicki Minaj unexpectedly named Lil Kim one of her inspirations when she was growing up. In spite of everything that had happened, Nicki pointed out; "I don't have beef with anybody, let me just say that. Life is too short. Nothing is ever that serious."
Nicki didn't use the track to take any specific shots at Lil Kim, but she called herself the "rap queen"... And it obviously hit a nerve with Lil Kim.
"Am I trippin' or did this h* just say my name ? / Queen of rap, f**k outta here / Queen's back, f**k outta here / Time to get this rap b**ch up outta here." spits Kim, who leaves Nicki with a strong message; "I gave you the rope, b**ch I want you to hang." Will Nicki respond?
