As she gears up for the release of her new track 'Battle Cry' and following the announcement of her upcoming mini UK tour, get to know the hot new US rapper on the block, Angel Haze.
Real name Raykeea Angel Wilson. She's the up and coming 22-year-old Detroit rapper that everyone's talking about. Let us break down the basics of what you need to know...
Haze has often likened her upbringing to that of a 'cult,' claiming that she wasn't allowed to listen to music until the age of 16 when her mother's religious beliefs loosened. At that point, she began listening to secular music including rap and hip hop. Picture: Facebook
The EP caught the music world's attention as it charted at number 58 on the UK singles chart.
Seriously though, Angel Haze's Twitter account is worth a look at. The rapper tweets everything from her random thoughts to her outspoken opinions - plus a lot of motivational stuff inbetween.
Most notably on 'Cleaning Out My Closet' where she freestyles over Eminem's tune; 'See I was young man, I was just a toddler, a kid/ And he wasn't the first to successfully try but he did' - we'll let you listen to the rest. Picture: PA
Often open about her sexuality, Haze is quoted as saying; “Love is boundary-less. If you can make me feel, if you can make me laugh – and that’s hard – then I can be with you. I don’t care if you have a vagina or if you’re a hermaphrodite or whatever.” Picture: Facebook
Haze had a place at Penn State University where she was going to study neurobiology and become a surgeon, but decided to go into music instead. .Picture: Getty
When Macklemore released a song about equality for the LGBT community, Haze took it and added her own stamp - making the track even more powerful. Her freestyle over the song features personal lyrics such as 'It's tougher when it's something you can't deny/ and ignorance teaches us it's something that you decide'. Picture: Facebook
When Azealia Banks tweeted: "Seriously, if you were not born in in NY… DON'T CLAIM NY. YOU ARE NOT A NEW YORKER." Haze took it personally and bit back, a ton of tweets and three diss tracks later, the lesson is, just don't do anything to annoy Angel Haze. Picture: Getty
After putting her own album online three months before its release date, Haze made a YouTube video to explain her actions. She claimed the album had been sitting complete for seven months and with regards to her label, said they were telling her 'I wanna support your dreams, but I'm also gonna f**k with them". Pretty badass.
Although her debut album was removed swiftly after she leaked it online, the label had no choice but to give in, and so 'Dirty Gold' ended up being released on December 30th.
The Sia collaboration is available to stream now and officially released on February 24th. Picture: PA
This week Angel Haze announced a mini UK tour that will see her perform in London, Birmingham and Manchester in early March this year. Picture: Facebook
